The Titan Times Newspaper recently caught up with Alana Bravo who was instrumental in planning the Black History month event in the IMC along with Brian Gardner and the executive board of Seekers Club sponsored by Mrs. Baftiri. They put a lot of planning and effort into making this event a success for our students. Their goal for the event was to bring together their school community and embrace African-American culture. Alana stated, “The executive board and I wanted to generate a bit more “buzz” and excitement for the event, so we created a Black History Month spirit week that led up to the day of the event, which is one of the aspects that differs from previous years.” The event included many different forms of entertainment, such as: music and dancing, popular black sitcoms in the presentation room, a Kahoot that had questions in relation to black history and culture, and treats for everyone to enjoy. In addition to this, there were a variety of vendors available for students to chat with. There were many businesses and representatives from areas within the community which showcased the diversity in workplaces in our area.
Alana appreciated working with the executive board throughout the many days of planning. She commented, “I had such an amazing group of people who were committed to helping and being a part of the event. With them, the entire process of planning, decorating, and even the day of the event, went more smoothly than I could have ever imagined.”
The members of the executive board had so much fun entertaining and informing everyone about Black culture. Our favorite part of the day was leading the dances and seeing so many students and teachers participating with us. One of the biggest takeaways of the event, in Alana’s opinion, was making sure no activity was over complicated, but instead, simple and effective. The executive board and Alana were all so happy about how successful the event turned out to be and all the positive comments they received from their peers and teachers. This is a tradition that they hope continues in the future, so that their community can all come together and embrace the cultures within their school. Thanks for all your efforts in planning a successful event that was enjoyed by all. Great job Alana, Brian, the executive board, and Mrs. Baftiri!
