On February 12th, students were treated to a career day at Tinley Park High School during Drivers Ed and PE classes. There were 20 tables that included careers in the trades, medicine, building, engineering, taxes, library, and more. Each table shared what it was like to have that job. For instance, I talked with a woman from a finance company who shared her daily routine when she is working. She told me about how she helps people manage their money, complete taxes, and financial aspects. I also talked with some people from Northwestern Medicine. They explained what some different careers are in the medical field. At their booth, they displayed a stethoscope, an oxygen pump, and a manikin that showed how to give oxygen to someone. There was also a flyer for those who were interested in joining a youth program they offer. The other booth I went to presented a board with pictures and explanations of what a nurse does. There were a variety of specialties such as labor and delivery, pediatric, ER, orthopedic, etc. Next, the Voss Equipment booth handed out paper notepads, pens, Chapstick, screwdrivers, and a booklet. The booklet had diagrams of their equipment and explained how to use it. Finally, the last booth I came across was a booth from the Tinley Park Library. The woman that is a librarian there discussed how to become a librarian and what degrees to earn to advance your knowledge of library and media science. Overall, it was a great experience for students and provided an opportunity for them to be exposed to a variety of careers.
