On Friday, November 1st, Tinley Park High School was able to host yet another International Fest: a celebration of all cultures and traditions throughout the world. International Fest has been going on for over five years at Tinley Park High School and has also included performing groups from schools within the district. It has brought together many family, friends, and faculty members to share their culture through food, music, dances, and other forms of art.
Recently, hundreds of family and friends, including myself, attended the International Fest, and it was an amazing experience. Over 10 countries brought food so that people had a chance to try their cultural food. The environment was very welcoming and friendly to all. Apart from food and dances, they also had people doing henna tattoo designs outside the cafeteria. The decorations were fabulous and people were able to connect and have respect for each other’s differences. The International Fest brings a sense of belonging and pride.
In addition, the different countries were brought together and showed an appreciation and unity for each other. There were 14 performances including my Central African dance with my sisters. Represented countries included: Greece, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Indonesia, France, Morocco, Argentina, Vietnam, Ghana, Albania, Palestine, Japan, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Argentina, and Morocco were all a big part of the night. Students who participated embrace the American culture while also speaking different languages and holding on to their own traditions and identities.
After trying out new foods and seeing performances, I am proud to say that this year marks another successful cultural celebration for our Titans. This would not have happened if it was not for Seekers Diversity Club and Ms. Baftiri. I hope you have learned more about the International Fest, and I would encourage you to visit next year
